Breaking the Silence: A Discussion of Disenfranchised Grief
Monday, May 15th, 2 to 3:30 pm OR 6:30 to 8:30 pm (two options)
Each society has cultural norms for grieving and mourning, defining whose grief is “eligible for validation and expression.” Likewise, there are those who “mourn underground” because their relationship with the deceased was not recognized by some facet of the culture or the reality of their grief is dismissed by others. This is called “disenfranchised grief” and may be experienced by estranged relatives and friends, LGBTQ or extramarital partners, neighbors, or persons who associated with the deceased in professional capacities. It may also be experienced by those who mourn the loss of pets. Join us for a conversation about disenfranchised grief, how to navigate it, and how to reach out to others who may be experiencing it. Please register by Friday, May 12th.
