A 40th Anniversary Celebration
On Thursday, October 10, please Join Yolo Hospice for a celebration of 40years of dedication to older individuals and those with life-altering illnesses during Luminaries of Life, at the Woodland Community and Senior Center, 2001 East St, Woodland, CA. Luminaries of Life will begin with a reception at 5 p.m., followed at 6 p.m. by a dinner and live auction. The Silver Moon Big Band will perform. Tickets to Luminaries of Life are $100. The favor of an RSVP is required. To RSVP, please contact Yolo Hospice at 530-758-5566.

During the event, Yolo Hospice also will honor individuals for outstanding commitment to the welfare of older citizens in the communities it serves throughout the year. This year’s award recipients will include:
This year’s recipient is Simranjeet “Simran” Cheema, a student at the University of California, Davis.
The Grace Award is named both for the first recipient, Grace Hiddleson, and for the virtues exemplified by The Three Graces of western mythology that inspired qualities such as Excellence, Service to Another, Charity, Mercy, Love, Gentleness, and Friendship. Each year the award is given to a volunteer who has excelled in compassionate service to the elderly and their caregivers.
As a volunteer for both the Citizens Who Care and Yolo Hospice programs, Cheema exemplifies dedication to those she serves. Over the years her work with CWC with older dependent adults and their caregivers has been a testimony to her kindness and desire to serve others. And her compassionate work with Yolo Hospice patients and families, and as a greeter for the grieving, has improved the quality of life of all those our organization serves.
The recipient of this year’s Excellence in Care Award is Dawn Myers, program director Dignity Health – Yolo Adult Day Health. The Excellence in Care Award was created to honor a physician/clinician who promotes, in an outstanding way, quality end-of-life care for patients and whose partnership with the greater community has benefitted the lives of others.
For more than two decades, Myers has served as a forceful advocate for the needs of the aged in Yolo County. She also spent more than five years as an appointee to the State of California Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Advisory Committee. Recently, Dawn joined the Board of Directors of Yolo Hospice, and chairs the Adult Day Care Advisory Committee.
This year, Yolo Hospice honors the Williams Family with the Legacy Award.
The award honors “a significant and lasting contribution to the broader field of hospice and palliative care.”
The Williams Family’s engagement with Citizens Who Care, and later with Yolo Hospice, has been transformative. Hibbard Williams’ deep commitment to geriatrics and serving the frail elderly was grounded in his professional life as a physician and Dean of the School of Medicine at UC Davis.
Following his retirement, he directed that passion to working with Citizens Who Care, starting in 2009 and eventually serving as its president from 2011 to 2014. But he continued to volunteer on a weekly basis, visiting a gentleman’s wife so that she might have respite.
His commitment and dedication eventually would ignite his entire family’s engagement with Yolo Hospice, and result in funding from the Mastick Foundation. Today his daughter, Julie Sheehan, carries on his legacy as a member of the Yolo Hospice Board of Directors.
