Yolo Hospice is a certified Music and Mermory organization. Patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease can greatly benefit from this unique and internationally recognized music program. Music reaches a part of the brain unaffected by the disease, and can have a powerful effect. When used appropriately, music can help manage someone’s stress-induced agitation, stimulate positive interactions and feelings, and facilitate cognitive function.
It can also help someone feel like themselves, and feel connected to life and to memories. This is especially valuable to a person’s identity as they age or feel isolated from the rest of the world.
Yolo Hospice began the Music and Memory program thanks to a generous grant from the Davis Sunrise Rotary Club, obtained through the work of volunteer Jose Martinez. We are now hoping to expand its reach. Each patient receives his or her own iPod, loaded with a personalized playlist of music, and a set of headphones.
If you have a used iPod or headphones, we are accepting donations at our office (1909 Galileo Court, Davis) or at Armadillo Music in Davis (207 F St, Davis) who have generously offered to collect for us.. This will help bring the gift of music to a greater number of people—and bring greater joy.
